By slaves and freedmen

at the Revista Brasileira de História

Organization : Silvia Hunold Lara (Unicamp)

Studies on slavery and freedom flourished these last decades, leading to an important volume of research on the commerce in bondspeople, the relations between masters and slaves, the forms of manumission, religious beliefs, and post-abolition dilemmas, among other relevant subjects. Nevertheless, little is known about what slaves and freedmen thought about slavery or freedom, and how they faced the challenges posed by these conditions. How did native people of Brazil, Africans and their descendants, who were enslaved or submitted to other forms of forced labor, perceive the world they lived in ? What values and ideas influenced their efforts to change their lives and those of their kinand companions ? What did it mean to be a slave, a freedman, an “aldeado” or an “administrado” ? How did those who sought liberty act ? What were the dangers they faced afterobtainingmanumission, or beginning their lives as freed persons ? What did captivity or liberty mean to them ? To be published at the Revista Brasileira de História, this dossier seeks to address the challenge of answering these questions and, at the same time, to discussthe theoretical and methodological questions of approaching the history of slavery and liberty in Brazil from the points of viewof slaves and freed people.
